I have used tools in the past from Quest Software (bought by Dell now I think?) which were useful for the small/medium business I was working for at the time. A product called vReplicator/vRanger did a job of replication using a specific schedule and did not harness vCenter as it wasn't available at the time.
Perhaps take a look at this?
